  • Visa: No visa for US passport holders in Portugal. The EU's ETIAS travel authorization is not yet operating; if it launches before your travel date it is a short online form with a small fee, and your advisor will tell you. Travelers with other passports: check the visa rules for your nationality with your advisor.
  • Travelers can join from any gateway worldwide; we arrange departures from any airport, or you can meet the group at the destination.

Good to Know

  • The EU's biometric entry system records a photo and fingerprints on first entry. Hotels are confirmed with your final documents; if a property changes, the replacement is of the same category. European hotel categories are not standardized against US ratings: rooms are usually smaller and many hotels occupy historic or older buildings, some in outer districts. One checked bag up to 50 lb (23 kg) plus a personal item. Airlines assign free seats subject to availability, seats together are not guaranteed, and some carriers charge for seat selection. Half of the tour price is due 91 days before departure and the balance 45 days before; the deposit and both payments are non-refundable, and a medical exception can be requested through your advisor without guarantee. Business-class fares are available on request and must be paid the day they are quoted. Travel insurance is recommended. If you use a wheelchair or have reduced mobility, talk to your advisor before reserving so we can review the options.

Questions About This Tour

Where does the Portugal New Year's Eve tour celebrate New Year's Eve?

In Lisbon. December 31 ends with the New Year's Eve dinner at a restaurant near the hotel, which is included in the tour price. If you prefer to see the fireworks from the water, the optional New Year's Eve dinner cruise on the Tagus River (USD 420 per person, subject to availability) includes a welcome drink, dinner, entertainment and the midnight fireworks.

Is the guide Spanish-speaking on the Portugal New Year's Eve tour?

Yes. The guide who travels with the tour speaks Spanish and the visits are conducted in Spanish. Most travelers on this departure are bilingual; if you prefer an English-hosted departure, ask your advisor for the dates that fit.

Which cities does the Portugal New Year's Eve tour visit?

Lisbon, the Douro Valley, Porto, Guimaraes, Braga, Fatima, Coimbra and Obidos, in that order, with seven hotel nights in Lisbon, Porto, Braga and Coimbra and the last two nights back in Lisbon for New Year's Eve.

Do I need travel insurance to visit Portugal?

No policy is required to enter Portugal on a US passport, but travel insurance is strongly recommended for this tour. The deposit and both scheduled payments are non-refundable, and medical care abroad is billed to you, so a policy covering trip cancellation, medical treatment and baggage protects the money you have paid. Your advisor can quote a policy when you reserve.

Can I depart from a city other than Miami?

Yes. The included airfare is the Miami to Lisbon round trip. If you live in another US city, your advisor quotes flights from your city to Lisbon, or from your city to Miami to join the group flight, and the rest of the tour stays the same.

What travel documents do I need to visit Portugal from the US?

A US passport valid at least six months beyond the return date with two blank pages, sent as a copy when you reserve. No visa is needed for US passport holders in Portugal. If the EU's ETIAS authorization starts before your travel date, it is a short online form with a small fee, and your advisor will tell you. Other nationalities: check the visa rules with your advisor.

How do I reserve the Portugal New Year's Eve tour, and when are payments due?

Reserve with a low deposit per person, which holds your place. Half of the tour price is due 91 days before departure and the balance 45 days before. Prices are USD 2,954 per person in a triple, USD 2,962 in a double and USD 3,561 in a single; children under 2 pay USD 2,225.

What can I do in Lisbon and Porto on my free time on this tour?

In Lisbon you have the arrival day of December 26 for the Chiado and the Praca do Comercio, and the full day of January 1 for Alfama, Belem and the viewpoints, or the optional Sintra and Cascais excursion. In Porto the afternoon of December 28 is free: the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia across the bridge, the Livraria Lello bookshop, or a walk along the Ribeira and the Douro.
